Sharad is an act of tribute and respect, devotion towards ancestors.It  is conducted for salvation aka atma shanti of departed ancestors (paternal as well as maternal).

Appeasing the dearly departed souls and offering them respect before God’s presence helps enhance one’s well-being. It is especially helpful in nullifying the effects of Pitr dosh. 

Shraddha is a ritual conducted for paying respects to departed souls of ancestors. Shradh is the ritual carried out to gratify one's ancestors. It is stated in the ancient texts that a person who does not execute the Shradh of his departed paternal and maternal near and dear ones has to bear much in life

 The ritual consists of a set of practices aimed at remembering the good deeds of ancestors and praying for their salvation. Fifteen days Shukla paksha in Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada is designated for conducting Shraddha. This year Pitru Paksha is observed from September 24 to October 8. It is a period when the Hindus pay homage to their ancestor who in hindi are called ‘pitr’. Pitru Paksha is observed during 15 lunar day’s period that is decided according to the Hindu calendarRemembering our departed near and dear ones and performing the Shraadh ceremony and Anna Daan to Brahmins and the poor is an age old custom of India. It is believed that if we remember them and perform a Puja for their soul and give charity in their name, they bless us and depart happily. It is believed that this ceremony helps the departed soul's progress in the journey in the other world.
